A lawyer who represents and defends a suspect or accused person in criminal proceedings both in and out of court.

Detailed Explanation

Every suspect has the right under Art. 103 Para. 1 of the Basic Law and § 137 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to engage a lawyer at any stage of the proceedings. In certain cases, the appointment of a public defender is mandatory, for example in felony cases or when the trial takes place before the regional court.
